Nestopia UE FAQ
Honest answers about Nestopia UE versions, platforms, FDS requirements and download safety. This is an unofficial fan resource; the project itself lives on GitHub (0ldsk00l/nestopia).
What is Nestopia UE?
Nestopia UE (Undead Edition) is an open-source NES and Famicom emulator. It is a fork of the original Nestopia, which was written by Martin Freij (his last original release was v1.40, in 2008). The UE fork was initiated and is maintained by R. Danbrook (0ldsk00l). The standalone GUI builds are published from the 0ldsk00l/nestopia repository on GitHub, while the emulation core is maintained upstream in the jgemu project on GitLab.
What is the latest version of Nestopia UE, and where does it run?
The latest version is v2.0.0, released on 2026-09-13. It ships a Windows x86_64 portable zip, a native macOS .dmg for Apple Silicon (arm64), and a Linux amd64 .deb package. Version 2.0.0 lists no Intel-Mac build. Files and SHA-256 hashes are listed on our download page.
What is the v1.99.0 release?
Version 1.99.0 was released on the same day as v2.0.0 (2026-09-13). It is a legacy win32 release with changes backported from v2.0.0, for users who need the older 32-bit Windows build. It is Windows 32-bit only.
Is Nestopia UE free?
Yes. Nestopia UE is free and open-source software distributed under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (GPL-2.0). You can download it, use it, and inspect its source code under the terms of that licence.
Does the standalone Nestopia UE have a rewind feature?
No. The standalone Nestopia UE does not have rewind. Rewind is a frontend feature: if you run the Nestopia UE core inside RetroArch, RetroArch can provide rewind. The standalone does include save states and a built-in cheat manager.
What do I need to play Famicom Disk System (FDS) games?
FDS emulation requires the Famicom Disk System BIOS file, disksys.rom, dumped from your own hardware. It is not bundled with Nestopia UE, and we cannot provide it. Without that file, .fds disk images will not run.
Does this website provide NES ROMs or games?
No. This site does not host, link to, or provide commercial game ROMs or the FDS BIOS. Use game files you have legally dumped from cartridges or disks you own.
Is there a Nestopia UE app for Android or iOS?
No. There is no official native Android or iOS build of Nestopia UE. On mobile, the usual route is RetroArch, which can run the Nestopia UE core as a libretro core.
Why does Windows SmartScreen warn about Nestopia UE?
Nestopia UE’s binaries are not digitally signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show an “unknown publisher” warning. That warning appears because the file is unsigned; it is not, by itself, proof about a file’s contents. Download only from the links on our download page and verify the file’s SHA-256 hash against the values published there before running it.
How do I verify a download’s SHA-256 hash?
On Windows, open PowerShell in the folder containing the file and run: Get-FileHash <file> -Algorithm SHA256. On macOS or Linux, run: shasum -a 256 <file> (macOS) or sha256sum <file> (Linux). Compare the result with the SHA-256 printed next to that file on our download page; an exact match means you have the same file as the published release asset.
Does Nestopia UE support netplay?
The standalone builds retain legacy Kaillera-era netplay support from the original Nestopia; there is no modern peer-to-peer netplay system built into the standalone. For a maintained netplay route, players generally use the Nestopia UE core inside RetroArch, whose netplay is provided by the frontend.
