How to Build Nestopia UE 1.53.x from Source on Linux Nestopia UE’s 1.53.x line has an unusual platform shape: the standalone binary of that line is a Windows 32-bit build, while Linux support in the same era means building the program from its source code. That is normal for open-source software — Nestopia UE is…
How to Play Famicom Disk System Games in Nestopia UE The Famicom Disk System was a floppy-disk add-on for the Famicom, sold in Japan, with its own library of games written to disks. Nestopia UE can emulate Disk System games, but FDS play has one requirement that cartridge games do not, and most failed attempts…
Nestopia UE in RetroArch: Core Setup, Rewind and Netplay Nestopia UE exists in two forms that share an emulation core but differ in everything around it. The standalone program is a complete emulator with its own windows and menus. The libretro core is the same Nestopia UE emulation packaged to run inside a frontend, most…
NstDatabase.xml Explained: What It Does and Why Games Need It Inside the folder of a Nestopia UE release sits a file most players never open: NstDatabase.xml. It is not a game, not a save file and not a settings file in the usual sense. It is an internal database that the emulator consults when it…
Fullscreen, Aspect Ratio and Scaling in Nestopia UE Playing in a window is fine for testing, but most players eventually want the picture bigger: filling the screen, at a shape that respects the original image, scaled in a way that looks acceptable to them. Save States and Cheats in Nestopia UE Two of Nestopia UE’s most used features have nothing to do with the original console’s hardware in the usual sense: save states and the built-in cheat manager. A save state captures your position in a game at an exact moment, from inside the emulator, so you can return…
Nestopia UE Video Settings: NTSC Filter, Scanlines, Palettes and HQx Nestopia UE gives you a set of video options that change how the NES picture is presented on a modern display, without changing the game itself. Four ideas cover most of what players ask about: the Blargg NTSC filter, scanlines, the HQx scalers, and colour…
How to Map a Controller in Nestopia UE A keyboard can start a game, but most NES and Famicom games were designed around a simple gamepad: a directional pad, A and B buttons, Start and Select. Mapping a controller in Nestopia UE means telling the emulator which physical button on your device should act as…
How to Set Up Nestopia UE and Play Your First Game Nestopia UE (Undead Edition) is an open-source NES and Famicom emulator released under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (GPL-2.0). It is a fork of the original Nestopia, which was written by Martin Freij and last released as version 1.40 in 2008. The UE…
